Returning to Andromeda

One Year Later (Aug 19, 2026)

The Andromeda Galaxy (M31), located more than 2.5 million light-years away, is the nearest large spiral galaxy to our Milky Way. Its bright central region, extended spiral arms and prominent dark dust lanes are accompanied by numerous bluish star-forming regions. Andromeda’s two satellite galaxies, M32 and M110, are also clearly visible within the field.

For me, however, this image represents much more than another deep-sky photograph. On August 23, 2025, Andromeda became the subject of my first astrophotograph, which you can view here. As the first anniversary of that night approached, I wanted to return to the same target and see what I could achieve one year later, with more experience, a completely different imaging setup and a much deeper understanding of image processing.

This new image was captured over two nights in Tarján during the astronomy camp of the Hungarian Astronomical Association (MCSE). It was a special feeling to watch the same spiral arms and dust lanes emerge during processing that had first shown me the possibilities of astrophotography a year earlier. This time, however, I was able to reach considerably deeper, revealing the galaxy’s delicate structure, faint outer regions, colours and star-forming areas in much greater detail.

Together, these two images of Andromeda tell the story of how much can change in a single year. The first one started my journey into astrophotography; this one has become a milestone along the way.
